If you’ve ever watched your toddler unwrap a new toy… play with it for five minutes… then move on to the box it came in, you know the struggle is real.

Every year, parents spend money and energy finding the perfect gifts — only for half of them to end up forgotten by New Year’s.

That’s why this list focuses on toys that actually last — the ones toddlers reach for again and again because they grow with them.

Here are 5 toys your kids will still be playing with next holiday season (and probably the one after that). This list is geared toward toddlers and preschoolers (ages 2–5) — the toys are open-ended, durable, and grow with your child through these early years.

1. Magnetic Tiles

Magnetic tiles are the MVP of open-ended play. Toddlers start by sticking them together in random shapes, but as their imagination and coordination grow, they start building houses, cars, and whole “towns.”

These toys encourage creativity, spatial awareness, and problem-solving — all while feeling like pure fun.

Parent tip: Go for a medium-sized set (60–100 pieces) so they don’t get frustrated by running out too soon.

Starting Age: 2+ years. Toddlers can start stacking and exploring simple shapes, then gradually build more complex structures as they get older.

2. Play Kitchen or Pretend Play Set

Around age two to three, pretend play explodes. A play kitchen, doctor set, or tool bench gives toddlers endless ways to imitate real life — which is exactly how they learn.

Over time, their pretend play gets more detailed and creative, meaning this toy will evolve right along with them.

Parent tip: Add real-life props like measuring cups, empty spice jars, or bandages to make playtime even more engaging.

Starting Age: 12 months and up.

3. Ride-On Toy or Balance Bike

Whether it’s a scooter or a first balance bike, toddlers never get tired of movement. These toys channel their endless energy and build balance, coordination, and confidence.

Best of all, as your child grows, they’ll use it in new ways — first pushing with their feet, later gliding and racing.

Safety reminder: Helmets are a must once they start picking up speed outdoors.

Starting Age: We started with a ride on car at my daughter’s first birthday, a scooter when she was around 20 months and balance bikes are appropriate for kids 18 months to 4 years old. The ranges for these can vary depending on your kid’s own development pace.

4. Process Art Supplies

Process art supplies are all about the creative journey, not the finished product. Think finger paints, stamps, large crayons, brushes, and paper — anything that encourages toddlers to explore colors, textures, and movement freely.

Why it lasts: Toddlers can experiment endlessly, and as they grow, their creations get more sophisticated. Process art builds fine motor skills, creativity, and independence — plus, it’s a screen-free activity parents love.

Parent tip: Keep supplies accessible and washable so toddlers can create anytime. Display their artwork to celebrate their efforts rather than the result.

Starting Age: Start with non-toxic wax crayons around 12 months old, and work your way up from there. Crayola washable markers are also a favorite in our home because they are completely washable (clothes and walls). Around 3, you can add scissors and glue.

5. Wooden Blocks or Duplo Bricks

Classic for a reason. Open-ended building toys never go out of style because they allow kids to create, destroy, and rebuild endlessly.

From simple towers at age two to imaginative cities at age five, these toys evolve as your toddler’s skills do.

Parent tip: Store them in a bin or basket to make cleanup part of the play routine.

THIS is our favorite wooden block set that you can introduce to kids between 10 to 12 months old. Duplo bricks can be introduced around 18 months and both of these will continue to be a favorite for years ahead as kid’s play in different ways.

Bonus: The Yoto Player

The Yoto Player is a screen-free audio device that plays stories, music, and podcasts through collectible cards kids can control themselves.

Why it lasts: It grows with your child — from lullabies and simple stories for toddlers to audiobooks and podcasts as they get older. It encourages independence, imagination, and calm time (a big win for parents).

Parent tip: Start with story cards for favorite characters or bedtime songs, and gradually expand their library as they grow.

Starting Age: The recommended age for the Yoto player is 3 years old, but the earliest I’d start with it is 2.5 years old!

Final Thoughts

The best toddler toys aren’t the ones with the flashiest lights or sounds — they’re the ones that invite your child to think, imagine, and play in new ways every single day.

These five (plus one bonus!) picks will stand the test of time — making them some of the best investments you can make this holiday season.

Love this ! We have the magnetic tiles and the Duplo bricks, question is, do these remain permanently on the shelf for play or do you rotate these too?
If I put it out and start so my toddler (3) continues, he takes that as invitation to play with me and I can’t walk away , what do you suggest please 🥺
If I walk away, so does he
