Why I love playdough for toddlers and preschoolers

Playdough is one of those activities that can grow with your child.

For younger toddlers, simply squishing, rolling, poking, and pulling the playdough apart is great hands on exploration.

As kids get older, they can start rolling little balls, making snakes, filling in shapes, and creating more detailed designs.

Playdough also gives little hands lots of opportunities to practice fine motor skills. Rolling, pinching, pressing, and manipulating the dough all require children to use and strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers.

And because it’s open ended, it doesn’t have to feel like “learning.”

They’re just playing.

How to use these playdough mats

You don’t need much to get started:

• The free printable mats
• Playdough
• A printer
• A plastic sheet protector
• Optional: a rolling pin, cookie cutters, or other playdough tools

For reusable mats, simply print them and slide each one into a plastic sheet protector. Your child can play directly on top of the sheet, then wipe it clean and use it again the next time you bring out the playdough.

Then put out a few colours of playdough and let your child get started.

You could say:

“Can you decorate the ice cream?”

Or simply leave the mat and playdough out and let them figure out what to do.

The best part? There’s no right way to do it.

One of my favourite things about activities like this is that you don’t need to sit beside your child and tell them exactly what to make.

Set it out. Give them the tools. Then step back and see what they come up with.

Sometimes the simplest invitation is all they need to get started.
