Planning a trip to Halifax with little ones in tow? I can help you with that!
Whether you’re exploring as a family for the first time or looking for a weekend escape with a mix of play, learning, and good food, Halifax offers the perfect blend. We spent 3 days traveling through Halifax and the surrounding areas with a toddler, and here’s a breakdown of what worked wonderfully for us—with plenty of helpful tips sprinkled throughout.

Day 1: Exploring Downtown Halifax
We kicked off our trip by settling into Residence Inn Halifax Downtown, which turned out to be a fantastic base for families. The suites come with a full kitchenette (handy for heating up leftovers or making a quick snack), and the location puts you within walking distance of some of the city’s top family-friendly attractions. Plus, they have a complimentary breakfast buffet which is the perfect slow way to start off the day when traveling with kids.
Our first stop after checking in was the Museum of Natural History—a manageable sized attraction for kids, with just the right mix of dinosaurs, local wildlife displays, and interactive exhibits. My 3 year old brought along her digital camera to snap photos of things she saw and wanted to add to her travel album once she got back home!

From there, we headed to the Discovery Centre, a multi-level science and technology museum where kids are encouraged to touch everything. There are so many areas dedicated to younger children, with water play and sensory exploration areas.
I’d recommend scheduling 2-3 hours at the Discovery Centre since there is a lot to do and it’s nice to give kids time to explore without rushing them.
After lunch, we headed to the Halifax waterfront, where the Submarine Playground provided the perfect reset. Think climbing structures, waterfront breezes, and space to roam freely. I think incorporating playground stops when traveling is such an underrated parenting hack. It gives your kids a chance for emotional regulation through play and movement, and a chance for you to just catch your breath too. When it’s hot, stop for ice cream at COWS and when it’s cold, get a hot chocolate at Uncommon Grounds.

After our lunch, we visited one of our favorite unexpected gems which was the Halifax Central Library. The children’s section is beautifully designed, with cozy reading nooks, interactive play zones, and an amazing rooftop view. It was also a great indoor backup option in case of bad weather.
Food-wise, Halifax’s downtown didn’t disappoint. For lunch or dinner, we recommend Ristorante a Mano—elegant but welcoming, with delicious pasta that our kids devoured. Freeman’s Little New York served up pizzas and burgers in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. And for an afternoon treat, we couldn’t resist a stop at Creme or Vandal Doughnuts on the waterfront.
If you’re in the mood for something a bit more elevated, The Bicycle Thief is also nearby—stylish, but surprisingly accommodating for young families.

Day 2: A Ferry Adventure to Downtown Dartmouth ⛴️
Day two started off with the complimentary breakfast buffet in our hotel lobby which is the best way to avoid a hangry toddler!
For a quiet, artsy break this morning, we picked the the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. This was a surprisingly good stop with kids, especially the Maud Lewis exhibit featuring her colorfully painted house—it’s compact, engaging, and offers a calm contrast to the buzz of the science center.

Next, we did something simple but memorable: a ferry ride across the Halifax Harbour to Dartmouth. It’s a short 15-minute journey, but for little kids, it’s a full-fledged adventure—complete with big windows, seagull sightings, and the thrill of sitting at the front of the boat.
Once in Dartmouth, we spent the morning unwinding at Sullivan’s Pond, a peaceful park with ducks, green space, and a gentle walking path perfect for strollers or scooters. Not far away is Shirley’s Splash Pad and Playground, a local favorite on sunny days. It’s well-maintained, and there’s plenty of shade for parents too. If it’s a warm day, pack bathing suits and a change of clothes, and let your kids have a blast running through the water jets.

When it came time for lunch, The Canteen was our top pick. It’s modern, bright, and super family-friendly, with high chairs and a kids’ menu that still feels fresh and healthy. They have a rotating, seasonal menu so look it up before you go!
After lunch, we treated ourselves at Portland Street Creperie, where our toddler loved picking out sweet crepes (and we appreciated the strong coffee). If you’re looking for something with more variety or vegetarian options, The Wooden Monkey is a cozy spot that caters to many dietary needs and is also a good option for early dinners.

The ferry ride back to Halifax in the late afternoon offered a wind-down moment, with my tired little one gazing out at the harbour as we cruised back to the city.
Day 3: Coastal Calm on the Eastern Shore
For our final day, we headed east for a slower pace and a bit of nature. We stayed at the Ocean Bay View Guesthouse, a peaceful spot with views of the water and room for kids to play outdoors. It’s an amazing guesthouse which private rooms, shared kitchen, shared lounge and shared amenities like a hot tub, a sauna, BBQ and more! The kitchen is stocked with whatever you’ll need and you’ll also have access to a breakfast and coffee bar.
Everything was super clean and they had the softest bedsheets we’ve ever experienced. The best part is that you can see the ocean from the window of the Darya room (where we stayed).

The highlight of our Eastern Shore day was Martinique Beach Provincial Park, Nova Scotia’s longest sandy beach. Even on a cool day, it was a magical place to explore. There is something about being near the vast ocean that makes me feel so small and our problems so little. I think this was my favorite part of our trip.

In the afternoon, we visited Ataraxy Farm, a charming working farm nestled just outside the city. It’s a wonderful spot for families, especially with young kids who are curious about animals and nature. The farm has a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and it was buzzing with the sounds of goats bleating, chickens clucking, and ducks paddling around. Our little one was thrilled to get up close to the animals—feeding the sheep, petting the bunnies, and watching the cows lazily chew their cud. The hands-on experience made it more than just a visit—it felt like a mini adventure into farm life.

Back near our hotel, we popped into Steeple Green Books, a quaint local bookstore that turned out to be a perfect rainy-day backup and a great place to pick up a new bedtime read. We picked up a new book for our little one because we love to support local!
We stopped at several local eateries that balanced fresh, local fare with a relaxed, kid-friendly vibe. Rose & Rooster Café was on the way up from our drive from Halifax and tey served delicious breakfast and baked goods (their egg sandwich was a hit). Uprooted Market & Café was a good stop near the guesthouse for a healthy snack, and we ended the day with classic fried seafood from Harbour Fish ‘n’ Fries—a casual, delicious option for eating outdoors if the weather allows.
