How to Get Toddlers and Young Kids Excited for Ramadan

Ramadan is a special time of the year for Muslims around the world. For parents of young children, it’s a wonderful opportunity to introduce them to the beauty of this blessed month in a way that is engaging, fun, and meaningful.

Here are some creative and simple ways to get toddlers and young kids excited for Ramadan that we incorporate in our home for our 3 year old:

1. Create a Ramadan Countdown

Children love the excitement of counting down to a special event! A visual countdown, such as a paper chain, sticker chart, or a Ramadan calendar with small daily surprises, can help build anticipation and enthusiasm. You can even count down to Eid once Ramadan has started!

2. Decorate Your Home Together

Transforming your home with Ramadan decorations can help set the mood. Let your child help with simple crafts like lanterns, moon and star garlands, and banners. Adding twinkling lights and a designated ‘Ramadan Corner’ with books and activities will make it feel extra special.

We created a simple Ramadan corner for our 3 year old and built out this mosque using a foldable poster board from the dollar store. It cost just $2 and you can reuse it every year! This year we added twinkle lights to it as well. I’ve shared a short tutorial below.

3. Read Ramadan Books

Storytime is a fantastic way to introduce young kids to Ramadan. There are many beautifully illustrated children’s books about Ramadan and Eid that explain the significance of the month in an engaging way. I’ve listed a few options HERE for you to browse.

4. Engage in Fun Ramadan Activities

From coloring pages and puzzles to sensory bins and crafts, hands-on activities can help little ones learn about Ramadan while having fun. You can also create an activity book with simple tasks like coloring Islamic symbols, tracing letters, or making a moon phase chart.

5. Involve Them in Simple Acts of Kindness

Ramadan is about giving and kindness, and even young children can participate. Encourage them to share toys, help set the table for iftar, or make a card for a neighbor. A ‘Kindness Jar’ where they add a good deed daily can be a great way to reinforce the spirit of Ramadan.

6. Make Special Ramadan Treats

Involve your child in the kitchen with simple, toddler-friendly recipes like date energy bites, fruit platters, or decorating cookies. Making food together helps them feel connected to the tradition of iftar and suhoor.

7. Introduce Simple Concepts of Fasting

While toddlers are too young to fast, they can still feel involved. Explain fasting in a simple way and let them ‘fast’ for a short period by delaying a snack or joining the family in a special suhoor meal.

8. Celebrate Small Milestones

Encourage excitement by celebrating small Ramadan achievements. Whether it’s completing a Ramadan-themed activity, learning a new dua, or sharing a meal, acknowledging these efforts will make the month more memorable.

9. Listen to Nasheeds and Ramadan Songs

Music and rhymes make learning fun! Playing Ramadan-themed nasheeds or simple Islamic songs can help children associate the month with joy and excitement.

10. End with a Joyful Eid Celebration

Looking forward to Eid is part of the excitement of Ramadan. Let your child pick out a special outfit, help prepare Eid gifts, and plan a fun celebration. A build-up to Eid makes the whole Ramadan experience more meaningful for little ones.

By making Ramadan an enjoyable and interactive experience, you’re fostering a lifelong love for this blessed month in your child’s heart. What are some ways you get your little ones excited for Ramadan? Share your ideas in the comments below!
